5 weeks ago my horse came up three legged lame. After a morning of freaking out at work after my barn owner called me with the new I was thoroughly convinced that he'd done something career ending to his suspensory D: A trip to the vet and a lovely vet bill later... the majority of his pain (and thus, the limping) was coming from a bruise on the lateral quarter of the foot, though there was definitely something soft tissue going on with the suspensory. He was reactive to palpation, but the vet deemed it minor and that, with rest, would heal up fine.
Sooo.... my dear Buddy boy is back on time off. Ick... ick ick ick. Prior to that injury, I hadn't ridden in about a month due to school taking up all my time and with him being a 40 minute drive (one way!) away. I have since moved him to a barn closer to town and AAAAAAHHH I want to ride so dang bad!
But, for the sport we do, Three Day Eventing, I don't DARE risk re injuring that suspensory. As of saturday he was finally non-reactive to palpation and was pretty darn close to being 100% sound. So... now that we've reached this point, it's at LEAST another month before I even think about riding him again. And even then it's going to be walk for two weeks, then walk and a little trotting for another two weeks... I probably won't even so much as think about conditioning work of any sort until March. But, by the time I do get back on him... it will be something like 3+ months since I've last ridden. That's the longest I've gone without riding in 8 years!
*sigh* For the record... suspensory injuries SUCK, even little ones!
On the bright side! My older gelding, Pie, is coming in one week!! WOOHOO!!! I can't wait! I've missed that snot of a horse so much!
