The Black

Ispiration for this piece came after reading the book The Black Stallion and then watching the movie the next day. I decided that I had to draw the Black how I saw him, tall, wild, free, and fast. Another characteristic I've always imagined of the Black is that he's never truly arabian. He doesn't have the fancy showieness that has been bred into the arab, he's wilder, more adapt to surviving where any other horse would perish. So, I managed to satisfy myself with drawing this, and I think I managed to get the feel I wanted. So I'm very pleased with what came out.

And once again, my scanner managed to ruin the image quality, for once it picked up the contrast and shading I did. But once again, all that shading, which looks smooth and pretty in real life, turned rough and scratchy on the computer screen. Oh well, gosh, I just can't wait for a digital camera.

I dunno how many of you care, but I do, the only reference used for this picture was one or two random pictures of shiny horses in various poses so that I could get the highlights and some of the shading right. But otherwise the pose, position, and much of the shading is totaly out of my head. So I'm very pleased if you ask me.

This is graphite pencil on sketchbook paper, taking roughly 4 hours to complete
